CONCACAF’s U17 Tournament
April 21st to May 2nd, 2009
Estadio Caliente, Tijuana, Baja California
Host: Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente

The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced last Thursday January 15th that Mexico will host the U17 Tournament, which will take place from April 21st to May 2nd, at the Estadio Caliente, house of Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente.
The tournament will qualify four teams to the U17 World Cup, to be played in Nigeria from October 24th to November 15th.
This will be the first international tournament to take place at the home of Mexico’s Primera División “A” team, and the second occasion that it will host an international game.
The announcement made last Thursday about the host and dates of the tournament, was made at the CONCACAF’s offices in New York, United States. This will be the first time since 1996 that the qualification event to the U17 World Cup will take place in only one location.
The Caliente Stadium will host all of the games for the U17 Tournament, in which eight national teams will play, divided into two groups.

The tournament
Group A will contain the United States, Honduras, Canada, and Cuba; while the second group will consist of Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Trinidad and Tobago. From these eight national teams, four will be at Nigeria 2009, because the first two teams in each group will get to play on the U17 World Cup.
The tournament, at Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente’s house, will represent the third time Mexico hosts the finals of the U17 tournament. In 1985, Mexico was the host for the tournament, and in 2005, one of the two groups to serve as the final qualification round to Peru’s World Cup.
The United States has never been eliminated from the U17 on this category, having advanced on 13 occasions to the World Cup; while Mexico is the runner up in terms of the number of times it has qualified for FIFA’s U17 tournament, having won it all in Peru 2005. Also, Costa Rica has qualified to the last four World Cups. The dates for each of the tournament’s game will be publish soon, informed CONCACAF.
Estadio Caliente
The stadium, which is home to Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente and CONCACAF’s U17 Tournament, was opened on November 11th 2007 in its first level, and has an actual capacity of 13,333 aficionados.
Xoloitzcuintles’s house has hosted games against Primera División teams, like Puebla de la Franja, and even a friendly game between Mexico U23 and Paraguay U23, before the Aztec team went on to play in CONCACAF’s Pre-Olympic Tournament.
Caliente Stadium has been modernized to receive the U17 national teams, the most significant upgrade being the new synthetic field that will be installed in less than one month from now.
The new field will be the first with FIFA’s Two Star certification, and the first of its type in all of Mexico. The field was fabricated in Belgium, where it was put under the strictest quality control before being transported to Mexico. The 32 rolls started to be installed last weekend at Estadio Caliente.
